The Baranduin Ensemble is a new Baroque Music Ensemble based in Vancouver, BC comprised of current UBC students and alumni. This is our second full season: three programmes exploring the repetitive, fantastic and popular aspects of Early Music. Our concerts for 2007-2008 will be held on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons in December, April and June at churches in Shaughnessy and at UBC.

Mission

We strive to make Baroque instrumental music accessible to the general public by offering provoking interpretations of classical repertoire. We currently perform with one player (or less) per part, and imbue our performances with both historical context and idioms of the present. It is our goal to reveal the Baroque style in the culture of today.

History

In 2005, two violists and a harpsichordist encountered each other thinking, "Wouldn't it be cool to perform Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 in B-flat Major?" They persuaded two gambists and a cellist to join the ranks and, in March 2006, the Baranduin Ensemble was born.

Their first performance was a joint production with VancouverVoices on Sunday 19 March 2006. Founding members Jessica Lockhart, Genevieve MacKay, David Poon, Alexandra Sia, Chrissy Spencer and Sarah Tippett performed Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 in B-flat Major, BWV 1051, and joined forces with members of the Borealis String Quartet and VancouverVoices in Handel's Dixit Dominus, HWV 232.
